At Sacred Heart, we are committed to delivering a creative, engaging and ambitious curriculum that ensures clear progression and full coverage of key knowledge and skills. At its core are the academic, personal, spiritual and vocational skills that prepare children for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.

Rooted in our Catholic ethos, we encourage every child to live the Gospel values, aim high, think big and love life. We believe that every subject is sacred and plays an important role in developing the whole child. Through a focus on creativity, enterprise and diversity, we seek to nurture pupils’ spiritual, academic, social and emotional growth.

We are ambitious for our children, our school and our community. Our aim is to develop compassionate, resilient and accepting individuals who will make a positive contribution to society.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced and knowledge-rich, enabling children to develop a strong vocabulary, deepen their understanding of the world and achieve mastery in their learning. We place a strong emphasis on long-term retention, recognising that progress is demonstrated through knowing more and remembering more. Through regular retrieval, purposeful practice and the use of knowledge organisers, children build secure foundations that support future learning. By making learning clear, memorable and meaningful, we ensure that all pupils are equipped for success both now and in the future.

What do we want our pupils to know and to be able to do by the time they leave?

The school curriculum reflects the requirements to provide a broad and balanced curriculum as per the Academies Act 2010(opens in new tab), and the National Curriculum programmes of study which we have chosen to follow.

It also reflects requirements for inclusion and equality as set out in the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice 2014 and Equality Act 2010(opens in new tab), and refers to curriculum-related expectations of governing boards set out in the Department for Education’s Governance Handbook.

Further information on how we achieve this can be found in our statement of equality information and objectives, and in our SEND policy and information report.
